To grain or not to grain – that is the Paleo question!

bread

One of the biggest arguments against the Paleo diet that I hear most often is the claim that “if you remove a food group like grains out of your diet, you’ll be missing out on nutrients.”

Funnily enough they never seem to elaborate much more than that, so of course it piqued my curiosity. Is it really true or are they just joshing with us?

Something is wrong with your diet plan…

Donut

So I was perusing instagram as I like to read other people’s stories about how they live healthy lives or tackle weight loss and there was one profile that caught my eye for all the wrong reasons.

How many calories do we use just living?

girlinbed

When researching the post on exercise for weight loss, I came across this piece which showed why the hour a day or 3 times a week exercise regime that most of us are doing, isn’t doing much for our weight loss goals.

It’s partly to do with what happens for the rest of our 23 hours per day and also the fact that poor eating choices do far more damage than can be rectified by moderate exercise.

It has to be something like 90 mins of intense exercise daily to have any effect on your weight and many of us can’t keep that up – or like me, I don’t want to, it’s just not the life I want to lead.

So let’s check out this daily calorie usage just by living thing…

Exercise for weight loss? Not quite the remedy we’ve been led to believe.

The articles published recently about the questionable effective relationship between exercise and weight loss mirror my experiences.

It’s funny because I have worked things out for myself for a long time now regarding weight loss based on how it feels for my body, and it has led me to the place I am now – happy, healthy the weight I want to be without much effort at all.

It helped me wade through the information overwhelm which is mostly conflicting and arrive at my truth. First it was about sugar which is now mainstream, then it was grains thanks to the Paleo crew who made that more well known and here is just another thing that my body taught me first.

The new paradigm is…

On your journey to weight loss, discovering a better way to make your favourite taste sensations is critical if your new lifestyle is going to last for the long haul.

So many people I see are trying to lose weight again and again, because they were able to muster enough willpower/determination for long enough to stay away from the cookie jar or keep going to boot camp for 3 days a week and get some results, but once that laser focus is relaxed even for a little, it comes piling back on again. So I’d say the method is wrong, wouldn’t you?

Eat all night long… and still lose weight.

One of my big discoveries on my weight loss journey was the fact that I don’t actually have to stop eating, or even eat less.

This was a big hallelujah moment for me as I love to eat – obviously, or I wouldn’t have found myself in the mess I was in. And as we all know, trying to stop something you are doing without something else replacing it, becomes a big huge void that at some point, you want to fill up again. And usually the filling up is the sliding back into old habits because you haven’t created any new ‘you bewt’ habits to go on with and create your new life.

Buttery Peanut Butter Fudge

PBFudgesq

So I was drooling over everyone else’s PB fudge online and I really love any recipe that doesn’t require me to haul out the food processor – I totally have to be in the mood to go that far! Anyway, as you know I love PB, so what could be better than little squares of this loveliness to tantalise your taste buds whenever you get the urge?

The cutting out certain foods debate…

Croissant

On social media, a person gave out some advice, which was aimed at those with eating disorders and part of it said…

“…and never leave any type of food out of your diet. Just eat less of it.”

Now I disagree with that sentiment completely because after discovering I was addicted to a few foods, leaving them out of my diet has been one of the most amazing things that has ever happened to me.

The 5:2 Diet and mindfulness…

diet, weight loss, slim birdy

Library trawling again, I found this short little paperback called The 5:2 Diet Book which is written by Kate Harrison and not the original diet’s author – Dr Michael Mosley.

It’s basically more of a story of her experience with the diet and snippets from others who are on it, taken from their forum where they discuss ideas and experiences with it all. Quite entertaining.

When I first heard about this diet, I was quick to dismiss it without really knowing anything about it – jump to conclusions much? Smack on the hand. I thought I was a bit more open minded about things these days. Sheesh!

Are you getting enough protein?

So I was thinking about my protein intake because it’s important for all kinds of things like your skin, connective tissue, muscle building or maintenance, makes hormones and enzymes and as a ‘fish only eating’ vegetarian, I wondered… “if I don’t eat fish every day, would I still be eating enough?”
