Eat all night long… and still lose weight.

One of my big discoveries on my weight loss journey was the fact that I don’t actually have to stop eating, or even eat less.

This was a big hallelujah moment for me as I love to eat – obviously, or I wouldn’t have found myself in the mess I was in. And as we all know, trying to stop something you are doing without something else replacing it, becomes a big huge void that at some point, you want to fill up again. And usually the filling up is the sliding back into old habits because you haven’t created any new ‘you bewt’ habits to go on with and create your new life.

But oats are good for you…..

healthy, weight loss, slim birdy,

Aaaahhhhh! Oats are coming at me from everywhere – instagram recipe images, friends, daily health snippets and they are touting them as the healthiest breakfast to eat ever.

From the nutrition facts I can see a bit of Iron and a bit of magnesium, some protein and fibre and a whopping lot of carbs. Apparently they help reduce cholesterol in the arteries, something to do with the fibre.

More claims are that they digest slowly, making you feel more full for longer.

Then why is my experience with oats completely the opposite? Tell me that?

Because none of us are perfect… there’s Blackmores!

Even though I am interested in my health, I read books on health, magazines, write about it and enjoy talking about it, doesn’t mean my food intake is 100% on the health track all the time. I do my best (well actually really I do what I want to do,) but that doesn’t mean I am text book perfect with all my macros balanced and eating shed-fulls of spinach, kale and everything else you are supposed to be eating to get adequate vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.

For one thing our food doesn’t have the nutrients in it that it used to have, we don’t have minerals in our soil anyway due to the lack of mountains in Australia, when you store food you lose some, when you cook it you lose some, so even if you were super conscientious, my bet is that you would still be missing something.

So I’m in favour of a few supplements. Not overboard mind you but a few things that help you feel your physical best. Interestingly too I have heard the scoffing, “yeah supplements, the most expensive urine.” But you know me, other people’s opinions don’t really sway me, it’s my experience and the real life experience of others to which I pay the most attention.

Chocolate Tweets…and a new buttery twist.

weight loss, raw cacao, losing weight, diet, paleo

One of my big revelations when I finally worked out how to lose weight was that you don’t have to completely give up the taste of the stuff you like to eat, while you are on your way. You just need to tweak it, so it goes from being junk food, which has no nutritional value, has toxins, and chemicals that your body can’t recognise, to something so amazingly good for you, tastes fantastic and has an automatic off switch, making binge eating or over eating a thing of the past. Meaning you can still eat it every day and still lose weight. Genius huh?

So one of the foods that most people absolutely love is chocolate.

Upstream Downstream

I had a fantastic conversation with a friend Pam who has been overweight all of her adult life, tried everything to lose it as well, without success. She loves to exercise, drinks lots of water, is into alternative health and the Law of Attraction, is active, fun loving, gets out lots but still this is the one thing that has niggled her and her whole family actually, all their lives.

Then she read my book.

What you can keep up…

I was having a chat with some Instagram peeps on their weight loss journey and some are going it alone, others are on weight watchers, some on slimming world, others lite ‘n easy, some have facebook support groups and some are helping each other out which is great. Then you get bombarded with crazy wraps, herbalife, shakeology and lots of other stuff, but you just ignore those.

So people post the food they are eating and the old food police in me wants to grab them and shake them!!!! I have to remind myself that they are on their own path and if they need my help they will come and ask for it.

Doing what works for you…

As I slowly tell people what I am up to with my book, many are curious and ask a few more questions about what the main philosophies are based around and I always reply, “the summary is… doing what works for you.”

For so long, the common message has been that there is one right way and if you are not doing it, then you are wrong. The impression given is that if you can’t do it, then you must be hopeless, useless, have no willpower, have no discipline, you are lazy etc, which is far from the truth. It’s just that the advice given doesn’t work for you.

Gelatin…the new superfood…and gummy lollies – yay!

GummiesLemonHearts612sb

So last week I mentioned one other food I was researching and experimenting with along with the psyllium husk disaster zone and that is gelatin.

So you mean that stuff that makes jelly and is made from horses hooves, cows and pigs carcass and everything else scraped off the killing room floor? Well…yes sort of and yes all animal. So if you are vegetarian or vegan, you might want to stop reading right now however as I have explained before, my approach to the food I eat is what feels good to me in terms of physical effects – energy levels, no pain, bloating, tiredness, nothing that is addictive to me, preferring anything that makes me feel refreshed, nourished, alive and sometimes that extends to animals and animal products like fish, eggs, occasional dairy and now gelatin.

No way! It tastes like Snickers!!

snickers1

It’s no secret that I am a fan of Chocolate and Peanut Butter together and in the past I would easily eat packets of Reese’s Peanut Butter cups until I was sick. Ah such is the lure of food addiction. I’m so glad those days are over.

So in it’s place I created healthy versions that allow me to have a normal relationship with these foods. I still love them to bits and enjoy eating them but because they are nutrient rich, I eat one or two and my body signals scream at me “that’s enough” and I can’t eat any more. A far cry from the past binge eating days.

So most of my weekly batches of Chocolate Tweets are the kind where I make a batch of PB balls as well and combine them together. So much rich chocolately goodness, and on the satisfaction scale – 150%!!

Do you weigh yourself every day? – No Way!

weight, loose skin, slim birdy, weight loss

I was checking through some instagram posts on what people are up to with their own approaches to losing weight and a person posted a question…

“do you weigh yourself every day?”

The owner of that account went on to say how they do weigh in every day; another one said ‘yes it keeps me on track.’ And my head was screaming – “no way! Keeps you on track for what? Total obsession about how much you weigh and how much you haven’t lost today?”

If a healthy weight loss is to lose 500g (1lb) per week (that is if this is permanent weight loss that you won’t put on again in a flash) then for 6 days out of the 7 what are you looking at? ‘No haven’t lost it yet. No haven’t lost it yet….’
