Five weight loss mistakes

five weight loss mistakes

I have been reading a few health books lately, specifically about grains and weight loss. The interesting thing is that they exactly mirror my beliefs on this subject and reveal at least five weight loss mistakes that people make.

My beliefs of course stem from my own experience but also of witnessing the plight of others who keep trying to do the ‘diet and exercise’ advice and fail spectacularly for years. Some never succeed and spend most of their lives miserable. (After dishing out hundreds of dollars on programs that can never work.)

So let’s take a look at what is wrong here…

So I was perusing instagram as I like to read other people’s stories about how they live healthy lives or tackle weight loss and there was one profile that caught my eye for all the wrong reasons. Let’s call her Weight Watchers Wendy.

Metabolic rate and burning calories

girlinbed

Do you know how many calories a day you use just living? That is, your basal metabolic rate?

When researching the post on exercise for weight loss, I came across this piece which showed why the hour a day or three times a week exercise regime that most of us are doing, isn’t doing much for our weight loss goals.

It’s partly to do with what happens for the rest of our 23 hours per day. Also the fact that poor eating choices do far more damage than can be fixed by moderate exercise.

It has to be something like 90 mins of intense exercise daily to have any effect on your weight and many of us can’t keep that up.  Or like me, I don’t want to, it’s just not the life I want to lead. Not to mention the fact that it lowers your metabolism.

So let’s check out the daily calorie burn just by living, basal metabolic rate thing…

best diet for weight loss

Best diet for weight loss

If you want to be successful at health and weight loss, the best diet for weight loss is one you can keep up long term.

I was having a chat with some Instagram peeps on their weight loss journey.  Some are going it alone, others are on weight watchers, some on slimming world, others lite ‘n easy. Some have facebook support groups and some are helping each other out, which is great. Then you get bombarded with crazy wraps, herbalife, shakeology and lots of other stuff, but you just ignore those.

People post the food they are eating and the old food police in me wants to grab them and shake them!!!! I have to remind myself that they are on their own path and if they need my help they will come and ask for it.

How to lose weight fast

coffee, friends, loose skin. excess skin

I had told dear friend Maryanne about the progress of my book and she listened intently like the loyal and beautiful friend that she is. She has heard about this book and the way I eat for about two years now, so perhaps it is sounding more like blah, blah, blah to her now. I can’t help it though as everyone is trying to figure out how to lose weight fast, without a thought about how it may affect their health.

Anyway, so we moved on to her news.  She proceeded to tell me about a naturopath she saw who told her about these weight loss drops to suppress your hunger and the diet you eat of only 500 calories.

What the?

I stopped in my tracks and my jaw dropped open. Involuntarily I started shaking my head and blurted out, “Nooooooo!

Weight loss mindset

Do you think your weight loss mindset is holding up your weight loss progress? What type of things come into your head around weight loss? Is it positive or negative?

Now I am not suggesting that you hear voices however it is interesting to be aware of the internal chatter that goes on inside your head.  Are you your own best friend or a mean pain in the ‘a’ who puts yourself down?

A great deal of the dialogue around this centres on the concept of ‘loving yourself’ and while I believe this is true, it can sound a bit hokey for some people and over the top. Like you are ‘up yourself’ somehow; not a great approach to an important concept.

So I like to think of it as being your own cheerleader or your own best friend, someone who is all of these things: Continue reading

Ah yes, New Year. New beginnings, a fresh start, a chance to wipe the slate clean and this time stick to those weight loss resolutions to get to your goal weight.
