‘It will be hard but it will be worth it’… really?

If I received a dollar for every instagram post with this supposed motivation quote on it, I would be a rich girly. Every time I see it though, I get a little irritated like being poked in the ribs.

My question is… why? Why does it need to be hard?

Are we talking about the same thing? I’m talking weight loss, what are you talking about?

In my experience, finding the right way to lose weight was hard. Trying to do everything they said I should do to achieve it that didn’t work for me, was hard. More like disappointing. But the actual path of losing weight when I was on the right track was easy! Easy I tell you. And why? Because it was the right way for me. It’s only hard if you make it hard by choosing the way that doesn’t work for you.

The difficult part was trying to endure all the ways to lose weight that didn’t suit me…now that was hard. It was also wrong and really quite silly, but I didn’t know any better at the time. I was listening to all those people out there who were telling me to:-

–          cut calories so you are just about starving – hard

–          do bootcamp type training – hard

–          go running – hard

–          count calories – hard (& boring)

–          do detoxes and fasting – hard

–          don’t eat any sweet food or anything you actually like to eat – hard

–          follow a particular diet – hard

–          go to the gym – hard

And most of these things were hard for me because I hated them, with a passion. That’s the only reason it was hard for me. For someone else who may love these things, they may be wondering what I am banging on about.

This is why it’s all so complex because some things work for some people and for others it fails spectacularly. So it’s really a task and a half to pin down the one right way to lose weight and that’s the clanger – there isn’t one!! It’s a trick question, if there was even a question asked!!

We are all searching for something that isn’t there. Sure in scientific studies or controlled experiments they might be able to pin down the basics – energy in, energy out that type of thing, however real life is so unlike science, people are complex creatures with likes, dislikes, wants and preferences, it’s all so subjective.

So the answer is to check out all the options and pick the parts that work for you. That is the only way. If you feel something is harder than it should be and you struggle to keep up your motivation to do it, or your life gets in the way and you easily drop what you think you should be doing, then just perhaps this is a big flashing, glowing, neon sign that it’s the wrong way for you.

It shouldn’t be hard, you should want to do it, and you should love it.

Here are some examples of how I have set up my new lifestyle to love it:-

Exercise – I only walk and do a few push-ups and sit-ups if I feel like it – love it

Switch from commercial sweets to home made with organic maple syrup – love it

No coffee, or caffinated tea – home made caffeine free chai is super yum

No bread – don’t miss it at all

No pasta – eat zucchini noodles if I want that texture or kelp noodles

I could go on and on, but the point is all the things I do, I am more than happy to do. I find it easy, I don’t feel like I am missing out on anything and I do it because I want to, because it makes me feel amazing, and not because I feel like I am supposed to do it.

So if you are finding your weight loss quest to be hard and you are trying to convince yourself that ‘it will be hard but it will be worth it,’ (pfffffft), I’m here to tell you that unless you are loving it, it won’t be worth it because you will hate it all the way and the first chance you get you will stop it and all the weight will come back.

So worth it? I don’t think so. Not even close.

Go find and do what you don’t find hard, what you want to do, what you love to do and magical things will happen.

Jive dancing anyone? How about a raw dessert making class?

Now you’re talking!

Happy, happy, joy, joy.
